I know; it's right after our NCLR Annual Event @ Hollister, but wanted to put this out there for any takers avail Oct 10-12.
One of the gals we met during the Bald Mountain Rescue Mission told me about this trail right above the famous Rubicon Trail. Ideal for stock vehicles with high clearance. Want this to be a family/kiddo friendly run (meaning we take our time, enjoy freq stops, stop for lunch on the trail, and enjoy).
The trail is called BlackWood Canyon/Ellis Peak trail (sure enough found in page 95 of the Guide to Northern California Backroads and 4wheel Drive Trails by Charles Wells).
As the guide points out:
- The trail rating is Moderate: narrow, steep, and rough in a few places but suitable for stock, high clearance SUVs.
- Features/general route plans (see attached overview sat map): explore a beautiful, high area of West of Lake Tahoe. Many Lakes and View Points. About 3.3 miles into the trail, we will see the sign Pacific Crest Hiking Trail (peak hikers interest for future trips). 3.5 we will see the sign Barker Meadow OHV trail (next time bring your quads/dirt bikes) (Point A to B).
7.5 will see Bear Lake (Point B to C). Continue to see Ellis Lake and Ellis Peak (8740 ft evelation) (Point C to D). Will park here, have lunch and explore.
Return on McKinney/Rubicon Springs Road to Hwy 89 (Point D to E).
(Near Point C: Red Arrow on the attached sat map) Optional "hiking" (not take our stock vehicles thru :D) to get a glimpse of the Rubicon Trail; see Cadillac Hill and perhaps turn around when we get to Big Sluice.
- Time and Distance: 18.4 miles from the start of the trail (total 26 miles starting from Hwy 89). Allow 3 to 4 hours.
- Trail Descrption: Map and details to be provided to attendees
- Services (see attached map): Kaspian Campground (I will call for detail for folks interested in camping) is 4.3 miles from Hwy 89 (Point A). Gas stations in Tahoe City and South Lake Tahoe (no gas along the western shore).
My plans: I am leaving the Bay Area Friday afternoon and checking-in to our (my wife and two boys are coming) timeshare condo soon as we get in S. Lake Tahoe (check out Sunday).
Staying at the Tahoe Seasons Resort. If interested, 1 bd rooms are still avail for Friday night stay @ $121: http://www.tahoeseasons.com/
Saturday morning; have breakfast, gas up, leave for the Blackwood Canyon/Ellis Peak trail @ 7am and be at the start of the trail 8am. Get to Ellis Peak by 11am/take a lunch break.
Continue on the trail after lunch and be on Hwy 89 by 2pm.
Optional hike on Rubicon Trail; be on Hwy 89 by 6pm.
Back @ the hotel, get cleaned up and the either room service or a big dinner somewhere in South Lake Tahoe.
Sunday: enjoy S. Lake Tahoe and surroundings! And after lunch or dinner leave to get back to the Bay Area.
...more details to follow; right now gauging interest. Post here if you can make it. Thanks!

Howdie Dan,
Didn't you used to live in Tahoe; yeah, too bad you can't go; could use someone who knows the area - plus help me eat baloot! :D J/K. No Baloot - I don't want to scare the kiddos (or adults) on this trip.
Here's a picture of Ellis Lake I found on the net.

Yeah Ron, I did live up there at one time, but on the North shore, in Tahoe City. I'm not quite as familiar with South shore, but I did go on number of camping trips on the West shore as a kid, on the end of the Rubicon trail at Miller Lake, Richardson lake and Buck lake. These lakes are only a couple of miles in and (at that time anyway) were still pretty accessible.

Will, this would have been perfect to introduce your modern Range Rover aka "the General" on this trail. Maybe next time.
If the Recce pans out, I will submit a trip sheet for next year (have to be after June snow melts, and after Deer migration ).
For virtual tour - check this out: You can use your mouse to pan all the way to the right (start on Hwy 89) to begin the virtual tour. And turn into Baker Pass, follow it to Blackwood Canyon, there is an unmarked road leading to Ellis Peak (GPS coords will get us there); turn back and head towards Rubicon Springs road out to Hwy 89: http://www.redtrails.com/id/t3285Lj/base.asp
This would be great for modern Rovers, and opp to hike down the Rubicon trail (and Classics like Dan's).
I am also planning to plant a Geo Cache along the way; should be a fun twist next time we officially hit this tral w/Geocashing. A good basic book to read is "Essential Guide to Geocaching" by Mike Dyer. Avail at your local REI or bookstores.
There will be a hidden message and price (will try to get my client Hi-tech Sports to donate a pair of hiking shoes or a prospect like Magellan to donate a GPS (both companies are located in N. Cal)).
More details to follow.... (see Sat pic of Ellis Lake and Peak; elev 8740 ft above sea level)

This is exactly the area I was talking about above! If you pan down to where the Blackwood Canyon trail meets the Rubicon and then pan east towards Tahoe, the first lake you see right along the Rubicon is Miller lake. Cool! Sure you can't delay this trip by one week...?:D

Darn. Wish I could Dan. But I promised the kiddos a trip that weekend considering I will be gone all wknd for our NCLR Hollister Event. Also I will be out of town the following week for a business wknd trip!
Hey maybe next time; we can camp by the water; I like that idea. I know we missed out on doing that on the Oregon trail!
My trips next year will be limited to Snow Run, for sure back to BlackCanyon in July, and maybe a Shaver Lake trip but a different trail other than Bald Mountain next mid summer before the big trip to Peru/Chile.

Cool Gary if you can! I certainly can use a 2nd rig (travel in two principle). I will get your cell and plug that in my SPOT; I can send you my GPS coord if we are meeting somewhere on the trail, or meet you at the start of the trail keep it simply. Will talk more...
This trip can is dual purpose: recce Blackwood Canyon Ellis Peak + twist of Geocaching, and looking for ideas for the next snow run.
Shaver Lake is ok, but want a lil more Northern California plus lots of lodging options in Tahoe, and things to do for our sig half (my wife who doesn't want to go wheeling in the snow but willing to do/hang with the kids if alt activities avail e.g. skiing).
Ok, back to work for me; sure hope this bail out gets completed soonw/more middle class protection! Stock market globally not looking good!

Attendees so far are:
Mike (Monty) and family
Chris (ChrisJB)
Chuck (Desertcrawler) and family
Ron (CT110) and family
Looks like 5 trucks is a good size; 7-8 maximum; min of two to make this recce trip happen. High clearance stock vehicles. Front and rear recovery points; bring shackles and 20-30 ft strap. Vehicle with winch is good to have but not req.
Blackwood Canyon and Ellis Peak areas are managed by the Lake Tahoe Basin Management; I called this morning 530-543-2600 and got the following update:
Trail Report
- Barker Pass Rd, Blackwood Canyon, route to Ellis Peak and Lake, and the Rubicon trail are open.
I've attached a pdf map from the Forest Service (follow the grid on the map; and Kaspian Campground is close to N39° 7' 30" and W120° 10' 0; zoom-in to about 75%)
Accommodation
- Kaspian Campground (start of our trail run on Barker Pass Rd) is open
Details: http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/ltbmu/recreation/camping/kaspian.shtml
Dogs allowed on lease.
Please make your reservation asap (only 9 campsites @ Kaspian) online or call 877-444-6777: http://www.recreation.gov/welcome.do?topTabIndex=Home
- Meeks Bay (South end of our trail run (Mckinney Rubicon Rd) on Hwy 90) is also open. Meeks Bay has cabins and studio cabins start at $90 (1 and 2 bd cabins are also avail for higher cost). You need to make your own arrangement: http://www.meeksbayresort.com/lodging.asp
- My family and I are staying at Tahoe Seasons Resort in S. Lake Tahoe (about 45 mins away from the start of the trail). 1 bd starts @ $121. We are arriving Friday and ready to hit the trail either Saturday or Sunday (see weather report below): http://www.tahoeseasons.com/
Food
BYO; if weather turns nasty @ your campground, more than welcome to join us for dinner at our suite in Tahoe Seasons Resort.

Decision Needed
With weather forecast to be rainy and 30% of rain on Saturday, I want to ask the group if the want to hit Blackwood Cyn and Ellis Peak trail Sunday instead. Perhaps Sunday is better to avoid the Fri/Sat "Yahoos" coming out of the Rubicon Trail especially if we want to avoid traffic. Need your feedback.
Also I contacted Gknapp from LRRForums; this past wknd it rained and he had to get his family members from a camping trip on Ellis Peak (8700 elev ft). Not prepared for the cold weather, he drove to Ellis Peak and took his family members back home. He reported to me snow (good snow ball fights) on the trail, but pass-able. Ranger confirmed that all trails are pass-able. His post/report: http://lrrforums.com/showpost.php?p=92689&postcount=33
Target campsite is not Ellis Peak; that's too high of elev and extremely cold this time around. Camping is planned at Kaspian (6200 ft elev). But still we need to prepare for cold and rainy weather, front and rear recovery points, straps, and winch is not needed but if your rig has one great.
If you are planning just for a day trip, bring 4 seasons tent, cold weather sleeping bag, extra food, first aid, water and blanket anyways just in case of breakdown.
If your family is not up for the cold (be prepared for low 30s) - consider cabins @ Meek Bay or someplace like Tahoe Seasons where I will be staying in S. Lake Tahoe.
In case of emergency and you find camping too cold, more than welcome to crash in our extra room or living room for warmth espeically your kids. My wife and two boys wouldn't mind the company! Pets not allowed by the hotel unfortunately.
Route - see pic 2
Point A to B: we turn into Barker Pass Rod from Hwy 89. Will pass Kaspian Campground and if you are camping, we can leave a sign "taken" on your reserv spot).
About 3.3 miles into the trail, we will see the sign Pacific Crest Hiking Trail and at 3.5 we will see the sign Barker Meadow OHV trail (for quads/dirt bikes).
Point B to C. 7.5 will see Bear Lake.
Point C to D. Continue to Ellis Lake and Ellis Peak (8740 ft evelation)
Will park here, have lunch and explore weather permitting.
Point D to E: Return on McKinney/Rubicon Springs Road to Hwy 89 (home).
Time and Distance: 18.4 miles from the start of the trail (total 26 miles starting from Hwy 89). Allow 3 to 4 hours (not counting checking out the Rubicon Trail (see below).
Side attraction if time permits.
We can drive as far as we can on the Rubicon Trail (direction of the red arrow) and hike (not take our stock vehicles thru) on the Rubicon Trail and check out Cadillac Hill.
Check out the top of the hill is Observation Point, a good place to see the rest of the Con and take a short break before we head out. Perhaps if time permits go further and see Big Sluice: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rubicon_Trail
Landiman just got back from the Rubicon trail this past wknd: http://lrrforums.com/showpost.php?p=92840&postcount=40

I was thinking the same Mike; and I am not afraid of rain; plus trail is rated moderate - with our numbers, should be fine.

if it ever gets to the point where the rain is too much (it always rains the hardest on the west side of the lake) another option are trails on the east side such as the genoa peak trail near south shore.

Camp Richardson has a RV park and probably the nicest camp ground in the area.
Between south shore and emerald bay on hwy 89. About 12 miles (20 min drive) from the trail.

When I was a kid you could camp right at some of the lakes along the trail. I camped at Miller lake which is right along the Rubicon below where Blackwood Canyon trail. intersects it, heading towards Tahoma and also at Richardson lake which is just a little SW of Miller. They are (or were) accessible with a trailer such as yours, Chuck. If I were going (and it looks like I might as my firm obligation for the weekend just un-firmed on me) I would consider camping at one of those lakes. They're just about 5 miles or so up from Tahoma on hwy. 89.

Chuck,
William Kent Campground is only 1.7 miles from Kaspian and they do allow tent trailres/RV - see pic 1.
It is registered on http://www.recreation.gov/ for online reserv, but don't know why it's walk-in only this time around. Perhaps late in the season. Anyways, with 84 sites and in the cold season, my guess is that you won't have any problems.
I'd suggest visiting http://www.recreation.gov/ type "CA" and "William Kent" in the search boxes, and pick the sites you want to stay. When you get there, you can have another look, and the pay @ the check-in booth.
Or as Dan suggested camp allong the Lake; I don't have experience camping w/trailer on the lake so can't tell you if permit is allowed. Good news - you will have company (Dan).
Or as Chris suggested camp Richardson; at least you can call and reserve a spot if avail. http://www.camprichardson.com/lodging/rvs.cfm;
Just keep in mind you are further away from kaspian/start of the trail - see pic 2. Actually closer to where I am staying which would be good - we can caravan to the trail together.

Hi Folks,
If Chuck and Dan are camping at Miller Lake, it doesn't make sense to start on Barker Pass Road/Hwy 89 area and have Chuck tow a trailer thru the trail and then park/camp near Miller Lake towards the end.
Makes much more sense to drive thru Rubicon Springs Road, and have Chuck park his trailer near the lake, and then "all of us" hit the trail in reverse - see pic 1.
With this said, I am reversing our route to start on Rubicon Springs Rd near Tahoma (Point A to B). Chuck to find suitable place to camp his trailer. Continue and take a diversion and see how far we can get on the actually Rubicon Trail; take a hike to see Cadillac Hill, Observation Point and if time permits Big Sluice.
This is not a Rubicon Trail trip, but opp to check it out; we should know this restriction anyways: http://www.delalbright.com/Rubicon/easement.htm
Then continue to Ellis Peak; enjoy the view (Point B to C) and continue rest of Blackcanyon trail and Barker Pass Road (Point C to D to E). And then say our good byes.
Depending on the weather, we can do this either on Sat or Sunday.
I also talked to my wife and if it rains Saturday, she does't mind hanging out at the resort w/the kids - plenty of stuff for them to do (I didn't have to twist her arm) and for me to able to hit the trails on Saturday with or without rain w/o worrying about the kids being soaked.
Then I can come back with my wife and two kids on Sunday (Sunny and 0% chance of rain), meet up with Chuck & kids, and Dan @ their choose campsite near Miller Lake. Let the kids run around and explore.
What do you guys think of the plan Gary, Mike, Chris, Dan, and Chuck?
PS - Chuck; I can bring the check for sliders (save you $ instead me sending you paypal payment)!

By the way, Tahoe Seasons Resorts doesn't allow pets and my brother-in-law has a last min change and can't dog sit over the weekend.
I am going to take Shakespeare, our family dog, to the local kennel "Metro Dog" but if you know of any good dog kennel in the S. Lake Tahoe area, let me know and I can follow-up. I called a couple of friends in tahoe and they couldnt think of any kennels or dog sitters in south shore that you can take your dog to. There are several that will come to your house to "babysit" your dog, which obviously doesnt apply to you. One thing I would suggest is call the local vet office and see if they know anyone.

I woke up this morning to a flat right rear tire. I didnt get a chance to take it off, but I assume it's a nail or a small puncture since it was a slow leak (went flat overnight and currently supported by a jack to keep from damanging the tire). Will head to the tire shop tomorrow to get it fixed. Crossing my finger's it's a simple repair as no one locally carries the nitto's :(

I agree!
We stayed in hotels/cabins in the Tahoe area before where Shakespeare was allowed to stay, but unfortunately this particular timeshare condo doesn't allow pets.
It's our 1 wknd a year stay at the timeshare condo otherwise just gets wasted if not used.
Anyways, Shakespeare is a good sport to stay in a Kennel, so others may enjoy e.g. hot tub...! Shakespeare will get a doggie bag for sure from the left over steak dinner!

Hey Chris,
Thanks for the offer on Friday, I think meeting up might be tough on Friday (at least for me & my family); we are planning to leave in the afternoon, but add the "getting the kids ready" and "kids' schedule" factor plus Friday traffic on I80. - who knows what time we will get to Tahoe.
However, Saturday might be better. Let's plan on joining Dan/Chuck & kids @ camp fire dinner. This way you can bring your dog, and if we decided to leave Shakespeare @ a local Tahoe Kennel, we can bring him also. Plus we twist Dan's arm and have him play the guitar!
With this said, be prepared to bring dinner over camp if interested.
And sorry to hear about your flat; yeah, hopefully you get it patched up well. I will bring my ARB flat tire replace kit in case another one springs up on you (or anyone of us for that matter)!
C yah Saturday.

Exellent Dan! Congrats on the new job and good to know you are coming.
I am leaving the Bay Area Friday late afternoon but don't know when my family and I will get there. In my earlier post, I mentioned to Chris to meet up with you and Chuck for sure Saturday.
Ok, let me post a Summary/Final Details.

Attendees
Ok, folks we have for our recce trip:
Dan (TigerDan) eta Friday
Chuck & Kids (DessertCrawler) Friday late or early Sat a.m.
Chris (ChrisBJ) Open
Ron (RonCT110) eta Friday or early Sat a.m.
And possible Mike & kids (Monty)
When you have a moment, send a PM to all parties above w/your cell tel # so we can get a hold of each other.
Weather Forecast
Fri or today's forecast in Tahoe City will be cloudy, expecting snow showers, winds 16 mph and temp in 20-30s.
Sat: morning snow showers, clears up by noon/sunny, clear night with overnight temp to dip in low 20s.
Sun: sunny all day, clear night with overnight temp to dip in the mid 20s. Chance of rain 0%
Mon & Tue: similar to sunday
Traffic/Commute
My family and I are planning to leave the SF Bay Area Friday afternoon (waiting for my 6 yr old son Max to get out of school). If we get out of the house by 3pm, we can avoid the rush hour traffic and will head straight to S. Lake Tahoe.
However, if we don't get out of the hour by 3pm and w/an updated weather forecast of snow showers on Friday, we might just leave early early morning Saturday and shoot to be in S. Lake Tahoe @ 8am. This way we can avoid the Friday rush hour traffic on I80 and then not run into rain/show shower on the way to Tahoe with a bunch of Bay Area folks making a mad dash for a wknd getaway.
Meeting Point/Time
What does everyone think of meeting at 10am; somewhere convenient at point A (see attached Map) (GPS Coord 39.070405,-120.140521) outside Tahoma on the map. On Hwy 89, turn left on McKinney Rubicon Springs Rd. Find a safe place to park and wait for the rest. Have each other's cell handy!
By the 10am, if the weather forecast is acurate, will still be showering.
But (the good news) by the time we get to Miller Lake (about 1hr drive) and after Chuck is finished dropping off the trailer, it should be sunny and clear for the to start our trail run.

Sorry to hear Chuck; take care of the back first - good call!
Dan and Shakespeare are going to miss you! :D
Calling Dan! Nobody is camping except for you. Might want to consider just staying in Sac on Friday (expected rain/show shower Friday) and meet Sat a.m.
And my family and I most likely are shooting for Saturday a.m. arrival w/bad weather expected Friday. This is turning out to be just a day trail run on Saturday.
Chris is still avail but he is not camping either.
Have not confirmed with Mike if he is going for sure.
Let's still shoot for 10am @ Point A (GPS Coord 39.070405,-120.140521) on Saturday.
Update: we might have one guy (GKnapp) from LRRForums joining us; he is a local in the area and has been to Ellis Peak.

I called Lake Tahoe Basin Management 530-543-2600 (option #1 on the menu and then press the option trail/OHV) just right now.
Ranger on duty said Barker Pass Rd and the Kasmian campground are open; also Rubicon trail is open. It's slippery due to the snow and not enough snow.
As of 12noon PST, Ranger said it snowing right now and expected to continue to snow tonight.
Weather forecast tomorrow is snow in the morning and sunny noon and the rest of the afternoon.
I also checked http://www.dot.ca.gov/ for road conditions on I80 and I50.

Look what came in the mail today; the topo map of the Rubicon Trail and surrounding area plus Trail Guide I ordered. :)
It shows the area we are going to run Barker Pass Road and Ellis Peak, and the Rubicon Trail we are hoping to check out if time permits.
According to the guide from Hwy 89 and into the turn off on Mckinney Rubicon Way is paved.
Then drive unto 3 miles of dirt road to get to Miller Lake.
Then after Miller Lake, about 2 more miles of dirt road till we reach rocky portion of the road; let's see how far we can get (1.8 miles) till we get to the Observation Point (Obs Pt). Let's enjoy the view of the Rubicon Trail.
With the snow fall, rocks will be very slipery; will use our better judgement on how far we want to drive on the rocks till we get to the Obs Pt.
If we can drive closer to the Observation Point, the better - w/o damaging our vehicles of course. Closer to the Ob Pt means less hiking for the kids less chance of slipping on slick/wet rocks.
According to the guide, the GPS Coordinates of the Observation Point is N39 02.09 W120 15.21
With this in mind, I am bringing two hikings sticks for my boys just in case and binoculars; make good use of it @ the Obs Pt since we are not running the Con today - maybe one day on a diferrent rig! ;)

I wouldn't be surprised if you take the JK and even take it further on the Rubicon Trail pass the observation point and close to Cadillac Hill; it's it the Jeep Rubicon! :) Ok, I have your cell # and you have mine!

Ditto on Japanese massue! Had I known - could have told Chuck that Shakespeare does Shiatsu w/his dog paws very well. Not that I have any experience, but I heard Vikings excite him, so chuck don't get him excited specially when he is on your back!:D;)

It was a great time and a bit chilly. I am used to the cold, but the other not so much :). There was some carnage. Ron took out a chunk of his rim and some tire damage on the left rear, Dan suffered some body damage while playing on the "easy" section of the rubicon, and I bent a rim slightly, but enough for it to no longer hold air. All in all it was a great day. Hope the others will post pictures as well. :)

Summary
Been a week since the trip; work got in the way from me posting this trip report. :D
Gap in time doesn't take away how great the trip was to Ellis Peak (amazing views), and the short diversion to the Rubicon Trail (that was challenging yet fun)!
Re: this recce trip; been looking for a new place to wheel especially for stock high clearance vehicles like my DII. I enjoy on occasion rock crawling or technical wheeling, but prefer a trip with a destination in mind with spectacular views (Ellis Peak), and camping with my two boys among friends (next time at Miller Lake). Certainly this recce trip, addressed all three for me.
On this trip, Mike (Monty) on his DI w/his two lil girls, Dan (Tiger Dan) RRC, Chris (Chris) DII w/his rescued dog, Galen (GKnapp from the LRRF as an awesome guest on this trip) DI and myself on my DII w/my son Max convoyed together to Ellis Peak and back.
Even though we didn't go thru Barker Pass Road (did the reverse starting @ McKinney Rubicon Trail to Ellis Peak), I had an idea of Barker Pass having the group snake our way up to Ellis Peak.
On the Rubicon Trail (headed to the Observation Area), we used our better judgment to go as far as we can travel on our vehicles, and had time to check out (the easy part) w/o sustaining major damage. Chris and I stopped where it started to get rocky and technical (having relatively stock DIIs). Dan, Galen and Mike forged on with very little damage on Dan's RRC.
Also this time around (Mid October) is perfect; no traffic on the Rubicon; no buggy's telling you to get out of the way; we only saw two highly modified Cherokee and Jeep Rubicon, and small group on ATVs. And if seeking more challenge (more snow) - make it a November trip. Everyone needs to prepare to camp on the snow in case of snow struck fest. Probably wise to have winch, non-winch, non-winch, winch, non-winch, and winch vehicle line-up. Again limit size to about 6 vehicles unless we have multiple groups of 6 separated by a day.
Details
Friday Oct 10 Preparation (Day Before the Trip)
I called the Lake Tahoe Basin Management 530-543-2600 (option #1 on the menu and then Trail/OHV information). The park ranger on duty said Barker Pass Rd and the Kaspian campground (planned camp ground if I wasn't staying at the timeshare) were open and remained open the weekend; also Rubicon trail was open but reported trails were slippery due to the snow and not enough snow.
I also checked online for weather condition; the weather forecast tonight was snowing in Tahoe City, tomorrow was snow in the morning, and sunny noon and the rest of the afternoon. Sunday clear and sunny.
Road conditions on I80 and I50 were clear but high winds: checked http://www.dot.ca.gov/ for road conditions.
With the rain/snow and high winds expected tonight, my family and I decided to leave next day or Saturday morning. Dan forged on to Tahoe City and stayed in a hotel vs camp (it was snowing). Mike, Chris and Galen agreed to meet Saturday 10am.
Saturday Oct 11 (D Day for Wheeling)
My wife all of a sudden wasn't feeling too well (finally the cold she caught from my 3 year took its toll on her) - she agreed to stay at home with our 3 year old son Jake and family dog Shakespeare.
My 6 year son Max and I were still game for this trip, said our good-byes (just glad we didn't catch the bug), and hit the road (Hwy 80) by 5am (from the East Bay). No DVD in my DII; it was great just talk to my son like a lil man he is becoming (well, till he fell asleep on me when I started talking about economics (smile)).
Passed Placer Ville on Hwy 50, I received a call from Dan; we confirmed our 10am meeting at around the corner Hwy 89 and McKinney Rubicon Springs Road.
Anyways, the day was starting to look better after the forecast. Sunny and clear as we passed the sign that said "Ice House" (turn-off to the Rubicon Trail on the Loon Lake side). Trace of light snow was present in the higher elevation from last night's snow fall. We arrived in the South Lake Tahoe area around 8am. It was a pleasant drive w/o traffic from the Bay Area to S. Lake Tahoe (really nice to visit S. Lake Tahoe off season).
My son and I had a lil bit more time so we decided to check-in at our timeshare (Tahoe Seasons Resort) before heading out to the meeting point. Nice property - the lift (forget which side) from Heavenly is just across; will come back here again during the ski season. After checking-in and quick look around, we were on our way to the meeting point.
About 500 feet to the meeting point, I passed Dan's RRC parked at the Tahoma Deli Market. I turned left on McKinney Rubicon Springs Road (the original meeting point area), called Dan to confirm, and sure enough it was him. This Deli is probably a better place to meet next time; place to park and grab lunch for later to consume. Turned around and met up with Dan. I called the others (important to collect cell # from attendees as part of the trip planning) and adjusted the meeting point.
Mike showed up w/his two girls (Kami and Kara) just a lil after 10am, followed by Chris & his rescued dog. Glad to hear Galen (local and familiar with Ellis Peak) was able to make it; however, he needed a lil more time; we agreed to get moving and just catch up with Galen on the trail perhaps at the Rubicon Trail Staging Area (another good place to meet-up). By the way, the line-up of sandwich choices at the Tahoma Deli Market were great (went for the ham although the meatball sandwich looked tasty); complimented with hot coffee and hot chocolate (for the lil ones) to deal with the low 40s temperature outside.
Turned left on McKinney Rubicon Springs Road; we drove on mostly paved rode (1 1/2 miles) and then arrived at the Rubicon Trail Staging Area where we aired down and hit the rest rooms. Had a brief discussion on to expect today. We wanted to checkout Miller Lake (scouting for the next camping place to stay-in; Dan noted that he had camped at Miller Lake a long time ago) about 2 miles from the staging area, hit the top of Ellis Peak (about 5 miles from Miller Lake), and if time permitted check out and get as far as we can get w/o sustaining damage on the Rubicon Trail (reverse route) Observation Area (2 miles of unfamiliar area to any of us). Also since we got started late (11am vs 10am), we agreed not to hit Barker Pass Road this time. I understand it was very similar trail level as the route to Ellis Peak (so didn't feel too bad missing out on Barker Pass Road since checking out the Rubicon Trail was more important).
We left the staging area a lil after 11am. With the recent snow fall, the relatively easy 2 mile trail from the staging area to Miller Lake was not dusty, and the cold temp keep the bugs out. This was going to be a nice October wheeling trip after all. Galen caught up with up as we started to climb in elevation; started to see small rocks on the trail (not a big as the ones we encountered later on the Rubicon Trail as we got closer to the observation area), and the snow made the trail really pretty. Miller Lake was nice; certainly a possible camping site for the next trip.
The trails were narrow; some portions were rocky; some climbs were steep ledges but not too many; really needed to shift and lock the transfer case to low; otherwise a great trail for stock Land Rovers to Ellis Peak.
We got to Ellis Peak; saw the steep trail to the near top. After Mike made it up there and reported the situation, highly recommend for everyone next time to just park at the base/close (about 150 yards to the top of Ellis Peak), not attempt to drive up the steep and loose gravel/rocks trail, and just hike up. Certainly it was temping, but dangerous to turning around as Mike reported after making it up, and turning around was tight as w/lil room avail and possible roll-over.
With this said, we parked, hiked-up to the peak and enjoyed the spectacular 360 view of Lake Tahoe, Rubicon and surrounding areas. At 8740 ft elev, it was breath taking (as well as being out of breath from the hike) and well worth the drive, and hike (150 yards up to the top). One of the objectives of the trip was accomplished!
Made our way down and it was passed 1:30pm already; we agreed to get moving and check out the Rubicon Trail Observation Area; all of us pretty much had been snacking in the car along the way, and didn't find the need to stop for lunch; Otherwise, where we parked in Ellis Peak would have been a great place to have lunch next time.
We back tracked down to the juncture - where the turn-off to the left was back to the staging area/back home, and to the right was the direction to the Rubicon Trail Observation Area. Adrenaline was high since this was uncharted territory for all of us. Recall the feeling of hitting an anticipated trail for the first time; well, that was the general feeling. Both excited, anxious and worried what the Rubicon Trail that awaited for us. Ready or not, down we went. My GPS pointed out that the Observation Area was about 2 miles away.
We passed a group of ATVs coming out of trail on the left and what looked to be the continuation of the Rubicon Trail, but I wasn't sure so I continued on; turned out that was the trail. We ended up on the wrong trail for about 1 mile (distance on the GPS was getting further from the observation point was a clue); if we had continued for another 2-3 miles, the trail would have connected us to Barker Pass (suppose if we wanted to skip the Rubicon Observation Area, this would have been the right direction but we all wanted to taste the Rubicon Trail (smile)).
After checking the map and GPS, we quickly turned around and back tracked where we saw the ATVs, turned into that trail, and sure enough we started seeing larger boulders of Rocks. Mike checked his GPS and confirmed we were back on the Rubicon Trail. We all had that feeling "we're not in Kansas anymore" as a figure of speech - the trail was rockier/more technical.
About a mile into the trail, we saw what looked to be a natural welcome sign to the Rubicon (relatively larger rocks (to us) awaited newbies to the Rubicon) and more technical; the general feeling was "WELCOME TO THE RUBICON OR GO HOME". Go home - not yet (smile)! So we agreed to move-in; I attempted to cross the first set of larger boulders and decided to go no further w/o sliders. Chris did the same; parked behind me. Dan, Mike and Galen forged on. We managed to hitch a ride and helped spot where needed.
It was a great feeling; pictures were snapping; lots of my gosh - what are we doing here but moved on bravely. We heard Dan damaged his sill. Galen and Mike were spared from crossing between two large boulders - very inspiring yet humbling to continue on!
We reached what looks to be the Observation Area; finally a relatively flat area where we can park; we took a break, had snacks and reflected on the experience. Concluded that need to come back here better prepared/equipped rigs for the trail, and perhaps accompanied by folks who have completed the Rubicon trail.
It was 4:30pm, getting colder and sun starting to set; we all agreed to head back to the staging area before dark. When we arrived at the staging area, it was already dark. We put air in our tires, and inspected our vehicles for damage (very important reminder). Chris discovered a bent rim - bent to the extent that it was hot holding air; quick change with the spare and he was good to go. I also had a rim and tire damage. The damage was on the thicker part/lip of the tire. Side walls took a beating but it held up and made it back home in the Bay Area - soon to be replaced.
Wow - what a day! The hard trail built-up our appetite; we agreed to hit S. Lake Tahoe and dine at Chevy's. I had a tasty sizzling steak fajitas and seafood combo meal with the mango lemonade (that was tasty). After dinner, we said our good-byes to Mike and his two girls Kami and Kara, Chris and his dog. Galen took off from the staging area. We had an extra bed in the timeshare and didn't want Dan to camp in the cold or stay in another motel, my son Max and I gladly invited Dan to stay with us. We pretty much crashed as soon as we got to the timeshare. Funny, at the resort, we turned over my DII to the valet service; Dan didn't want anyone touching his truck (and I am sure the feeling is mutual with the valet guys); Dan has a nice truck but I am sure he didn't want anyone driving his truck not familiar with it; he gladly parked at the visitor self-service parking lot.
Sunday Oct 12 (Rest Time and Head Back Home)
Woke up around 9am; after Breakfast at the resort, we all got ready/packed and headed back home. My son and I checked out the S. Lake Tahoe shores area till noon, and headed back home (with a quick stop @ Norcal Relics in Woodland to pick up my long awaited battery cover from my defender). Dan I believe was planning to stop by Placer Ville to see Landiman.
And before I forget, I did plant a cache somewhere on the Rubicon Trail. Actually, before the trail started... I have the GPS coordinates if anyone interested in heading up there again. There is a nice surprise in the cache for the lucker person finding it - a nice cigar to smoke; wrapped and well protected from the elements! Sign the log, hide it again and if you decide to smoke the cigar, just replace it with another one for the next person to enjoy!
Anyways, great trip, good company and excellent wheeling experience (enjoy the various pictures below from my camera, Mike, Chris, Dan and Galen's)!

nicely done Ron. from the planning/ trip leading all the way to the write up. to anyone else thinking about this trip, it was worth the views and the quiet/ tranquil time in the mountains (lake tahoe) with fellow rover buds. i'd gladly burn another 2 days of vacation time to go again.

The system coming this weekend will probably drop a lot more snow. We are due to have snow here in the valley floor by sunday night. Hopefully more will keep coming. I am def interested in joinging I am good with any weekend. One problem is that I may not get my wheel fixed in time. If I cant drive my own rover can I ride shotgun with someone? Dont feel comfortable going off road with mine without a proper spare handy.
