I just bought the Yaesu FT-2800M for $125.xx and change. I didn't have the budget for the expensive Kenwood unit with APRS.

In talking to Mark from HRO in Oakland, he suggested that I look into Tiny Trak device; my Yaesu can interface data but doesn't have the built-in APRS; he pointed me to Tiny Trak for $43 assembled kit (or $33 (SIY) you Solder it yourself): http://www.byonics.com/tinytrak/

Any opinion or experience with Tiny Trak; if it works as claimed, sounds like a way to go for budget minded HAM equip like me using Yaese FT-2800M in upgrading or enhancing it to be APRS capable.

Want to get my HAM lic, radio, and APRS (no biggie but would be great) feature setup. I am planning to use Delorme's LT-40 (maybe), or my Baja Claw as the GPS (supports APRS).

The Tinytrak will send out your position to the APRS network allowing other to track you. it will NOT allow you to receive the location of others on your mobile setup. Keep that in mind when deciding what to purchase for APRS.

One of the great features of APRS is being able to see each others location on your mobile GPS while on the trail. You give that up with the "budget" version of an APRS installation so consider that when making your purchase.

If all you want is to send your position back to others so they can track you, the budget version is an excellent way to go.

Good to know Gary; thanks!

Suppose for the budget equipment and want to add Tinytraks, we can atleast (participants) send our location to the trail leader with full blown.

Thanks!
