Ok, time for an official pre-trip planning thread. I have posted a poll which I'd like each of the people planning on attending to take a quick look at and respond to...

Here is my list of attendees so far that are confirmed or highly probable

1. NCLR025 Chuck Mobraten (DesertCrawler)
2. NCLR121 Andrew Wood
3. NCLR ? Antonio Anguano
4. NCLR070 Brenton Corns (Disco2Guy)
5. NCLR087 Dan Harris (TigerDan)
6. NCLR093 Nathan Harrison (SloHybrid)
7. NCLR122 Robert Vega
8. NCRL001 Will Selden (GotRovr)
9. NCLR002 Gary Young (PCRover)
10. NCLR024 David Badillo (Saquatch Offroading)
11. NCRL078 Luis (possible) (Jantiz)

Should be a good trip! I've added a poll for some basic questions to help in trip planning. I would like to know when people are planning to arrive, and also what types of trails you would like to run. On the trails side, here are the options:

a)Snake Lake Sluice downhill -- this is a tough one, may get body damage. Would need to be winched if you don't have lockers in a couple spots. We can spot you through without damage, but there are spots where you can get yourself into trouble

b)Little Deer Lake -- this is intermediate. Covers parts of the same trail above, but the easier sections. No winching cause we would be going down the hills requiring that. We would exit out a different way (avoiding Snake Lake Sluice) to avoid the real hard stuff.

c)Easy -- Still rocks, but mainly fire roads, etc. Cover parts of the trail we would be running with Little Deer Lake (the easier part) and would end up exiting via Jonsonville. Haven't figured out the exact route yet -- need to make sure people want to do this run before planning it. We didn't really do this last year.

The final question would be whether people would like to exit out a different way -- via the Sierra Buttes and the Firehouse. THere is a firehouse that we could climb up to, and a high mountain pass with a very switchbacky 4x4 trail that dumps us out on the other side of the Mountain range closer to home. Would probably take about 4 hours on Sunday.

Post up your thoughts! Friday will be a camp day, maybe with some informal night runs..

Sorry, I didn't see the caravan vote. I plan to do the morning caravan if at all possible. For my group of people that are attending it looks like there will be a late arrival on Friday night (Brian), but he is part of the original 8 people I mentioned that will join us at camp, but not on the trails Saturday. He has 4x4 experience and feels confident about the trail to the campsite. I believe he too will be in a stock 4Runner. For the Sierra Buttes trail out on Sunday, are those passable with stock 4Runners too? I think Charles Wells' book said it is fine for a stock vehicle.

Way out should be doable with a stock r4runner.

Cmon, vote for your favorite trail runs. So far the "intermediate" is in the lead for Saturday, and no-one wants to do the "easy" run...

Here are some details on the Intermediate run:

a)We will head out of camp towards Little Deer Lake, take that trail down and around to the Snake Lake intersection. We may take a look at the steep downhill that the advanced guys would be coming down, and figure out if it could ever be climbed by a Rover...

c)The we will head out the easier way, turning right towards Camp Nejedly/Four Hills MIne and the A-tree (running along Pacific Crest Trail). We will exit by Johnsville, hoepfully with enough time to check out the Museum and Park Office. The will return via the pavement, gas up and get ice, and head into Gold Lake on the same trail we arrived.

Should be able to make it back to camp in time for a swim and fix dinner when it is light. I'd say it is about 5 - 7 hours of driving time.

We will want to pack up and head out early, cause there will be some wheeling ahead of us on Sunday morning.

We will head up and out of Gold Lake, turning left this time on Gold Lake Trail (again along the Pacific Crest trail, over to the Packer Lake Saddle. That will take about one hour. Then we wll head out on Sierra Buttes Trail , take the spur road up to Sierra Butte's Fire Lookout, and depending on the time we may have some folks do the hike up to the lookout (takes about an hour). Then it's on across the pass on Sierra Buttes road -- ending up in the town of Sierra City. Would estimate about 3 hours of wheeling to Sierra City, maybe 4 if we stop and hike to the Fire Lookout.

Then it's back to the Bay Area, via Grass Valley and Auburn this time for a little change of scenery...

Just checked with the Downieville Rangers station for Tahoe National Forest.

Fire restrictions are in effect (no campfires outside of campground -- we are OK in the Gold Lake OHV campground).

The roads we are planning on running are all open, no restrictions. Just need to "tread lightly" and stay on the trails...

For those leaving Friday morning, we are going to rally up here to Convoy...

Address:
500 Appian Way
El Sobrante, CA 94803

Google says it is about an hour -- It looks like about a 1 1/2 hour drive from my place, allowing for traffic. I will be leaving the Peninsula at about 7:30 am.

My cell phone is 650-208-1175. I will have my CB tuned to channel 7, and my HAM radio tuned to the Simplex channel for NCLR.

If you want to go up it, I am sure there willl be plenty of us willing to watch!

Stake out some good campsites for us -- I think the ones near the far end of the campground (that have a little beach by them) are the best ones for a large group with kids who like to swim...

FRS 7,0 is a good channel too. I'll bring some along.

Chuck,

Jeremy Libby from Lake Tahoe and his Series 88 wants to attend as a guest; don't know him - sounds like a good guy. He sent me an email thru our NCLR club directory. I replied to Jeremy and copied you.

I am not going on this trip unless I can wrap up quickly helping a friend move out of his appt, and can be there only for Satruday trail run. Anyways, please contact Jeremy. Thanks!

Hey, I found a map that shows our campground.

Take a look at this one, if it attaches. Our campsite is shown by the little tent symbol located in between "little Gold Lake" and "Gold Lake". Actually, there are sites all along the lake shore, we want to try and get one as close to the place the trail turns to the left and heads towards Tahoe forest (those sites have a bit more of a beachfront). But any set of sites would be good. Try and stake out enough for 10 - 15 rigs.

Look on the bottom center of the map, near the boundary with Tahoe National Forest.

And get lots of wood!

My friend got this (I think it's the same model) from Midland. It wasn't through NewEgg, but I have ordered from them before. Very fast shipping since they are Cali. based. I'd think if you order tomorrow you could get it by Thursday. He also got a mag mount antenna and had to get a BNC adapter for it to connect to the hand held.

There are bear lockers at the campground to store your food. Just plan on using the usual precautions one takes in bear country, like not slathering your body in maple syrup or bacon grease.....

We probably only need 2 spots. They are very large.

Just put something on one of the other spots (ie a cooler, etc) and we should be OK. Or park in one and tent in the other.

Worse comes to worse, we'll all crowd into one..

Also, I am going to bring some paper plates a marker to put NCLR and some arrows as to the correct way to get there. You might use some tape to block one off, or just post some paper plates that say NCLR event.

I'd be suprised if it is an issue Thurs nite. Friday during day people probably start to arrive..

I'm planning to leave here first thing in the morning, arriving midday. It's also possible that I'll just say to heck with it and leave tonight, or very early tomorrow...I'm not caravanning with anyone due to my location and route so I've got that flexibility. If I do get there early, I can help with securing sites. The site(s) where we camped last year were certainly roomier than the beach sites but the lakeshore is rocky with no beach. They were open and roomy with good shade though. I seem to recall that there are only two or three beach sites, and the one closest to the rest of the campground sucks-it's small, very open with little shade and is gravely...I even seem to recall some concrete curbs or something, like maybe it used to be a launching ramp. The other beach sites are better, just a bit close to the road so traffic dust may be an issue (though I suppose it's possible that the most traffic will be us.:D)

sasquatch
08-13-2009, 03:57 PM
If those spots are taken, take a look at Little Gold Lake. I camped there the first year and it was awesome!!! You can fit a ton of rigs back there as long as no one has a trailer. Definitely the best view in the neighborhood.

I'll be heading to both rendezvous, the one at 9 and the one at 9:30.

I'll run CB channel 7, Ham Channel on the NCLR frequency which I have to look up again, and will have FRS on 7,0. Whatever camp site we choose will be a good one -- I'd like to stay out of Little Gold, if possible, just to maximize the swimming potential. If I remember right, the swimming there was a little dicey..
