View Full Version : Series Rovers up in yo' grill at the february morg

All,

We (the mendo recce email list) are thinking about "crashing" your february morg. We just completed a week long death valley trip and are finding ourselves exited to do rover stuff even more than usual. For some time, our only group gathering has been a yearly run to mendocino.
So, while the rover emotions are high- we thought it might be fun to visit with you guys. I dont expect that there will be too many of us but a few will show up hopefully to camp overnight. We are thinking some type of food share/pot luck saturday night and normal trail running all other hours.

With your permission of course- can we crash your party?

Linus,

By all means yes.... It would certainly be nice to see you and other Mendo series rovers playing at HH

can't speak for the powers-that-be, but as far as i'm concerned it ain't no party unless you're there pickin'!

how was "the valley?"

Yea Linus lets do it! We also have Martin Luther King Day coming up, I am bummed about missing out on Death Valley but would love to hear the stories.

Any chance of getting us into that "private area" for some camping Will?

April/May/June are the chosen months for getting access to the Hudner Ranch

That area is very sensitive to being overly wet (erosion) or overly dry (fire danger)

That sounds great Linus, I just read the post on the mendo list. I like the idea of camping overnight - it is a far enough drive for me and a much beter opportunity to relax with everyone.

I think that this is a great opportunity to let the Mendo list people see that we are a Rover family......and all Rover owners are welcome to come, and no rovers also to MORG's. So Pinz's, Volvos etc...come one come all.

Maybe someday in the future, the Mendo crowd will join us on a trip too.....so much knowledge and experience in the Mendo crowd that would be a joy to experience....

I got the camping bug too. I think the best place to camp would be in that little campground by the creek that is away from all the offroad madness at the obstace courses. If we got enough rigs there on Friday night, we could probably take over the entire campground. Only downfall of that place is the poison oak for kids...I remember...

x2. That is Sycamore Camp. As Chuck said, if we have a good showing Friday night, we can take most, if not all of it.

New member here. Just paid my dues for 2010! I had a great time at the July MORG with Jantiz + others so I have to get back down to Hollister again.

Sounds like it could be a good time. I'm down for camping and potluck fiesta Saturday night.

Sorry that I can't be there. I really need to bring the wife out to ride in a LR3 on dirt trails. That should convince her. Although I'd not suggest she ride with Luis for the 1st time.

I'll be in the Great White North eh. Starting my Olympic experience. Watch for my posts from Vancouver in the NCLR around the states thread...or now NCLR around North America.

Enjoy

Looking like rain all week for the area too. Was planning on bringing the family, but need to be home by 2pm. If it is raining Friday and Sat, that wont happen as mud means time...

If I don't see you all, have a great time. Thanks Linus for being the unofficial organizer...Hope more of these group meets happen again!

Would be nice if we could have more events that we all go to. I hope you can make it- rain or shine. Mud is annoying but we could just stay in camp and drink booze instead...

Im still not sure how many of us will show up, I can certainly count on only two right now.... (thanks brian)

No matter, will be fun regardless! I am excited.

Linus,

will know more later on. Suzie remembers you and the Park Ranger from Mexxis...funny the things that click. I don't know about others, but I think it would be great to have the mendo crowd come to more events/runs....The annual run (which is members and invited guests only) would be a great time too, as it is 3 days camping in a "rover specific" spot. NCLR members love rovers, rover owners, spirits, music and just the overall experience. I know a few mendo folk, never been lucky enough to make the not a ralley, but think deep down all of us are kindred spirits...

Looking forward to crossing paths, either this MORG or later on...if you ever need an invite, count on me for it!

Communications from the main School House gate to Sycamore Camp are sketchy unless using HAM. I believe the Ranger kiosk closes at 7:00PM so getting access to the gate combo after that time is troublesome. I would suggest that anyone camping early on Friday do a gate check at 8:30PM. Those planning on attending Friday after hours (Colin) make your best effort to show up at the gate before 8:30PM or at some other time that you post on this thread.

ColinB

We could probably figure out a way to "post up" the gate code, as well. I am going to be there pretty early on Friday, or so I hope. Taking day off, just need to clean up the trailer and garage enough to get packed up for me and Tyler. Maybe there by 2.00 or so? I now have my blackberry and could email the code to anyone who wants in on Friday but may not make the code. I will also have my HAM and CB with me.

Linus Tremaine
02-01-2010, 05:51 PM
I hope to be there by 6:30. I suppose it will depend on the traffic from santa cruz on hwy 1.

I am going to be bringing my ham radio and my non land rover offroad vehicle due to the possibility of rain. I would like to be in the rover, but that would mean tent camping since I sold my dormobile.

Anyway- gate check at 8:30. Anyone coming after will need to climb over the gate and come find us!

My HAM call sign is KJ6AQK ill leave it on and Ill try to reach you chuck, if I cant get in.

I'll probably be there fairly early as well...not sure what time, I'm pretty flexible and have nothing else planned for Friday. Might not bring the new trailer though, it still needs a bit of work and I'm not sure how waterproof it is so I'll probably just plan on sleeping in the back of the Rover. Good thing I'm not any taller or I'd need a LWB!

Bad news.:-(. I may not make it. The rover is having a temper tantrum. The steering box died and I might not be able to fix it by this weekend. We will see. I will keep you up todate. If I make it I might be mid saturday. Does anyone have a d2 steering box?? I am on the hunt.

I'm going to stay home for this one after all. Mud and rain are just not my cup of tea. I'm still cleaning the mud off the LR3 from having to go out on the field this week to recover a stuck military Hummer. Not fun at all on both accounts!

I would say meet at Sycamore, take inventory, kick a few tires......

Based on the weather forecast, looks like we'll be keeping to the lower 40 (old and new obstacle courses) due to expected slick conditions on the steeper trails

TigerDan

Looks like I'm going to have to bow out of this one. I've got a couple of things going on that I've been trying to work around, but the weather isn't being very cooperative. A major one is that I've got someone coming to look at my dad's MG (which I'm helping him to sell) this weekend and it's suddenly decided to show its English blood and stop running properly. Worked on the carbs yesterday but still need to do some more, and now it's pouring outside and I don't have any cover to work under. Right along with that I have a few things I need to do to the Rover before taking it anywhere, and that ain't happening either...so it looks like I'm not going anywhere.

ColinB
02-04-2010, 07:52 PM

Bummer Dan. Tyler was looking forward to playing his guitar with you around the campfire. All 3 chords he knows. And I was looking forward to getting some rear end measurements (from the Disco ) so we could start talking about my Bday present tire carrier.

I'm glad you qualified that statement! If Griff had gotten ahold of it...well, need I say more?:D

And since I've got a decent break in the weather so far today, I'm back to working on getting it all done. If I can still make it, I'll most likely be getting down there later than planned, it's about a 3-1/2-hour drive for me.

Will, do keep an eye on Rod from Besa Auto Care; he is planning to join NCLR on the MORG; wil let him know to you guys @ Sycamore Camp or obstacle course - which one are you guys going to hit first (new or old?). He will be driving a white D1.

I am not sure if I can make it - have a few projects pending and Shaver Lake Snow Camping is coming up. Want to take use avail free wknd now to complete my "Honey Do" list before Shaver Lake.

Have fun in the mud/water guys!

Make sure someone brings tools/stuff to deal with wet elecronics e.g. WD40, MAF cleaner... or better yet water proofing ECUs (smile).

Crap! Got the MG squared away and turned my attention to the Rover. Turns out my VC is bad, don't have time to do anything about it and don't want to risk driving it that far. It seems to have failed open so I essentially have rear wheel drive only, so even if I were to risk making the trip it would keep me out of doing any wheeling. I thought that if the VC failed open the truck simply wouldn't move, but I'm getting mixed messages in searching for definitive info on the subject.

I've been wondering why I was getting a little rear wheel spin on hard acceleration in the wet. With one front wheel off the ground, tranny in Neutral I can spin the front wheel and with it the front driveshaft with very little resistance. I've checked good VCs before and know how much resistance I should be getting, this is nowhere near being close, so it really looks like failed open VC to me.

I've been planning to swap in my LT230, thought I might do it before Shaver Lake but wasn't too worried about it if I at least got my TrueTrac in place by then. Now it looks like I definitely need to make that happen, so I think I'm going to take advantage of this break in the weather and get started on it today.

Chuck, why don't you guys join us on the Shaver Lake trip? Maybe Tyler can learn a 4th chord by then!

Good times yesterday. It was great to see Linus again as well as everyone else. Scraped the nooks and crannies of the Rover before the Clay turned to brick. 4 completely full 5 gallon buckets of mud!!! It would have been twice as bad had I not sprayed down the suspension arms and exposed frame areas with WD-40. I'll just dip the entire rig next time!!!!

I missed wheeling with most of you guys since I showed up so late but I had fun playing in the mud regardless! Next time I've got to get a CB and get with the group. Made me nervous wheeling alone most of the day.

Great meeting all of you that made it out and will look forward to the next adventure. I made a short video while I was wheeling...mostly of my LR3 but gives you an idea of the mud fest we were playing in.
