LCD Backlight Bulb Replacement - DII

If the bulb backlighting the LCD in the instrument cluster goes out, you can't see what gear you are in or how many miles you have on the tank of gas (if you keep track of it that way). It's a real pain.

Anyway, I just replaced mine. Part was available from Land Rover Redwood City as an overnight order. Tiny and not too expensive. Part number YAW1020. You have to remove the cowling and instrument pack. Not too difficult, just fidgety work getting it all back together. The bulb is the one in the gray holder behind where the LCD is on the panel.

Or you can get the bulb itself from Jameco for $0.49. Look for a 14V 0.080 amp lamp with the dimensions: D=5.1 mm L= 11.4 mm. Watch out for the shipping charges from Jameco - the LR part is cheaper! It doesn't look too hard to replace the bulb in it's holder: after disassembly just clip out the old one and solder in the new one.

OK, time to get the truck ready for the Oregon Discovery Trail 2010. It's about 500 miles to the trail head, 200 miles of trails and 450 miles home. All this in 6 days. So here's the list (so far):

oil change
check fluid levels
check differential and transfer case fluid levels
lube the drive shafts while I'm under there
check for loose stuff under the truck
check for loose stuff under the bonnet
wash and wax - wax helps with the pin striping
check the tires and air them to highway levels
check the batteries and connections - gonna be running the fridge
put in a new shelf for the second GPS receiver and re-wire
sort out the radios one more time
install Jerry can rack on the top
check out the winch and re-wrap winch line

Also check the gear I'm gonna take:
inventory the recovery gear
lube the snatch block and hi-lift jack
inventory the spares crate and utility crate
fill up Coleman fuel containers
get a new tarp

I'm not sure how, but I find myself deployed, in charge of all Air Force Communication on the whole base. I am wondering aimlessly on the internet finding odds and ends to purchase and have my wife to throw into a pile for me to install on my Defender upon my return. I'm not sure how many people buy houses while they are deployed, yet I find myself doing that very thing. This base is overwhelmed with Germans who all drive the cool G-Wagon(modified for duty in the desert, of course) and totally make me miss my defender more and more every day. That is all I have to say on this, my first blog on the NCLR site.

Well, it took a while. My guy I go to here in HMB lost his SMOG technician due to illness and I had to schedule it at another location. Nothing like plowing new ground, especially at a dealer - Jame Ford in HMB. Anyway, it all turned out OK and the truck passed with flying colors. I was amazed at how low the readings were compared to the standards.

OK, with nothing better to do on a rainy Easter I was poking around on the NCLR website and thought I'd start blog'n. Here's what's going on with my G4 ....

1. First smog check coming up tomorrow. Hope it passes. It's probably due for new plug wires but I'm hoping it's good enough to sneak under the state limits.

2. Still being plagued once in a while with the 3-amigos. It always clears on engine restart so until I can get 'em to stay on permanently it's likely a waste of time and money to take it to Cerrone's. Maybe when it stops raining and warms up a bit ....

3. The powder coating on the rear ladder is flaking off and rusting underneath. If Jim gets to do his laser thing I plan to clean it up and repaint it. No powdercoat - just Rustoleum.

Til next time ...
